A spoiler-light field guide

.hack//consumed What to watch, what to play, and what you can safely skip.

.hack wasn't a game that got an anime, or an anime that got games. It was built from day one as one story told across several media, with each piece covering a different slice of a single timeline. That makes the entry point confusing. It also makes the answer to "what order?" pretty clear.

Is it all interconnected?
Yes.

Anime, games, OVAs, novels and manga all sit on one chronological timeline. Their contents don't overlap.

Can I just watch the anime?
Not really.

The series are prologues. The big payoffs happen in the games. There's a screen-only route, but it has gaps.

Do I need every game?
Not strictly.

Not for the whole story. If you only want one playable arc, G.U. Last Recode is a single modern package, but it skips the start and the end.

01 · Pick a path

The whole story first, then smaller cuts of it.

Path A is the complete franchise. Each path after it covers less. The full chronological walk-through is further down.

PATH A

The Full Story

The whole saga, in story order, from the very beginning. This is the real thing; everything else is a cut-down version of it.

  1. Watch .hack//SIGN
  2. Play The four PS2 games, with Liminality episodes between them, then the Unison OVA to wrap it up
  3. Watch Roots
  4. Play G.U. Last Recode
  5. Play Link, then Watch Quantum and The Movie
Step 2 needs a PS2 or a recap. Link needs a fan translation patch.
PATH B

Screen Only

The whole timeline without a controller. You want the plot and will accept gaps.

  1. Watch SIGN
  2. Watch Liminality (plus a recap of the PS2 games), then Unison
  3. Watch Roots
  4. Watch G.U. Trilogy, a CG film that condenses the G.U. games
  5. Watch Quantum and The Movie
Biggest gaps: the PS2 story, the game-only Reconnection epilogue, and Link.
PATH C

Just the Middle

Smallest option: one generation only, on hardware you probably already own. You skip the beginning and the end.

  1. Watch .hack//Roots, 26 episodes
  2. Play .hack//G.U. Last Recode, four volumes in one package
Platforms: PS4 · PC (Steam) · Switch.
Skips Generation 1 and Generation 3. Roots is a pure prequel to the game.
02 · How it connects

Three generations, two lanes each.

Screen pieces mostly set the stage. Game pieces carry the main plot. Solid arrows are direct story handoffs. Dashed lines run at the same time. Dotted arrows jump forward in time.

The Original Era

The first version of the VR game The World. The anime comes first, then a four-disc PS2 story with real-world OVA episodes alongside it.

  1. Anime

    .hack//SIGN

26 episodes + bonus OVAsTV anime, 2002Start of Gen 1

A slow-burn, atmospheric mystery about a player named Tsukasa who can't log out of the game. It sets up the world, the lore and the threat that hangs over everything after it.

It's the prequel. The PS2 games begin right after it ends.

Intermezzo and Return. The main run is 26 episodes, and the finale is titled Return. Intermezzo is an optional bonus OVA. Listings differ: some number Intermezzo as episode 27, after the finale, while some sets place it before Return and label both as OVAs. If you're watching a set, follow its order. Neither of them is Liminality, which is a different OVA that goes with the PS2 games.

Stop before the last episode in the boxMany sets and streaming services list a bonus episode called Unison (sometimes "Episode 28") at the end of SIGN. Don't watch it yet. It's set after the four PS2 games, so save it for after the PS2 games (it has its own card further down).
How to watchStreaming rights change by region, so check your usual anime services. Physical copies exist too. The 2015 complete-series DVD set includes the bonus OVAs. Some earlier sets leave Unison out.
  2. Game+ OVA

    The IMOQ quadrilogy + Liminality

4 games, PS2one continuous story4 OVA episodes alongside

.hack//Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, Quarantine. You play as Kite, who is trying to save players stuck in comas and stop a rogue AI. The four discs form one linear story, so play them in order.

.hack//Liminality is a 4-episode OVA that shows the real world while Kite plays. It was originally bundled with the games, one episode per disc. Watch each episode after you finish the matching game.

    DISC 1Infection
    → Liminality Ep 1
    DISC 2Mutation
    → Liminality Ep 2
    DISC 3Outbreak
    → Liminality Ep 3
    DISC 4Quarantine
    → Liminality Ep 4
Access problemThese games only ran on the PS2 and feel dated. If you can't get a PS2 (or run your own discs through an emulator), a story recap or let's play on YouTube is a fair substitute. Used discs are often around $10–20 each and full sets around $100–130, but prices move.
  3. OVA

    .hack//Unison

    1 short episode"SIGN Episode 28"Epilogue to Gen 1

The wrap-up for the whole first generation: a celebration with the casts of both the anime and the games. Don't skip it. It's set after the four PS2 games, even though it's filed as a SIGN episode.

Watch it here, not with SIGNMany DVD sets and streaming services tack it onto the end of SIGN with no warning. Watching it there puts it long before its place in the story and spoils the games. Skip it until you've finished Quarantine and its Liminality episode.
  4. NovelsOptional

    .hack//Another Birth

    4 volumesEnglish: Tokyopop, 2006–2007

A novel retelling of the four PS2 games. It's a good, cheap alternative if you can't play the discs, and a rewarding re-read if you did.

  5. Manga / AnimeOptional

    .hack//Legend of the Twilight

    Anime: 12 episodes, 2003Manga: 3 volumes, 2002–2004

Twins Shugo and Rena get avatars styled after the game's legendary heroes Kite and BlackRose. It takes place about four years after Quarantine.

The manga is canon. The anime isn't quite. The two match for roughly the first four episodes and then split into different stories. Read the manga if you want the canon version. Watch the anime only as a completionist.

2

The Modern Era: G.U.

Years later, in The World R:2, which is a grittier and more chaotic update of the game. This is the easiest place to jump in, and the only arc you can play on current consoles.

  1. Anime

    .hack//Roots

    26 episodesTV anime, 2006Start of Gen 2

A player named Haseo joins a guild and lives through a run of tragedies. Like SIGN, it's a pure prequel.

It ends exactly where the game begins. G.U. Rebirth picks up directly from its final moments.

ShortcutShort on time? The G.U. Trilogy film (see Extras) condenses the G.U. story into one movie that continues from Roots. It's a recap, not a replacement for playing.
  2. Game

    .hack//G.U. Last Recode

    PS4 · PC (Steam) · Switch4 volumesRemaster, 2017 (Switch: 2022)

A fully restored remaster of the three PS2 G.U. games (Rebirth, Reminisce, Redemption) plus a brand-new fourth volume, Reconnection. Reconnection is a short epilogue set about a year and three months after the main story, built around a promise Haseo couldn't keep.

This is the one part of the franchise you can play easily today, which is why the smallest path, C, is built on it.

  3. FilmOptional

    .hack//G.U. Trilogy

CG filmaired Dec 2007, on disc Jan 2008

A condensed CG retelling of the G.U. story that continues from Roots. It's the quick option if you only want the plot. You'll miss the gameplay and the Reconnection epilogue.

3

The "Beyond" Era

If you finish G.U. and want more, the lore continues. It gets fragmented from here, and several pieces never left Japan.

  1. Game

    .hack//Link

PSPJapan only, March 2010set in The World R:X

Takes place roughly two years after G.U. It follows a junior-high student, Tokio Kuryuu, who is pulled into the game and saved by Kite. The story is told in a manga-like style, and several characters return from earlier entries.

Needs a patchIt was never officially localized. A community English translation patch covers the full story (the final v2.0 release came in December 2023). You'll need a PSP or an emulator.
  2. OVA

    .hack//Quantum

    3 episodesKinema Citrus, 2011

A short OVA released in early 2011 and best treated as a compact side story. Its exact slot in the timeline is loosely defined, so there's no penalty for watching it on its own.

  3. Film

    .hack//The Movie Beyond the World

    CG filmJan 2012set in 2024

Set a few years after Link, this is the latest chapter of the in-universe timeline. A new player, Sora Yuki, sees a girl attacked by a smoke-like entity in The World, and soon players start losing consciousness while logged in.

  4. GameOptional

    .hack//Versus

PS3 fighting gameJapan only, bundled with The Movie

A spin-off fighter released alongside the film. It never received an English release. This one is for completionists only.

04 · Extras & what's next

Things you'll run into, and what they are.

Japan only

.hack//Fragment

A PS2 game that was only ever released in Japan.

Japan only

.hack//Zero

A 2003 Japanese publication from Kadokawa that was never translated. Not to be confused with the newly announced game below.

Bonus

.hack//SIGN bonus OVAs

Intermezzo is a Mimiru side story. Unison is a short epilogue set after the PS2 games, so don't watch it with SIGN. It has its own card right after the PS2 games. Some sets list Return (the finale) as an OVA too. Intermezzo is optional, but Unison is part of the main story.

Coming

.hack//Z.E.R.O.

Announced on February 16, 2026 for CyberConnect2's 30th anniversary: a new action RPG "for home consoles" and the first original .hack console game in over a decade. CyberConnect2 is developing and self-publishing it. Platforms and release date haven't been announced, so it may be a couple of years out.

05 · FAQ

The questions everyone asks first.

Is .hack really one continuous story?

Yes. The anime, games, OVAs, manga and novels tell distinct, non-overlapping parts of one timeline. That's unlike franchises where the anime just re-tells the game. The only real exception is the anime version of Legend of the Twilight, which leaves the canon manga after a few episodes.

Can I skip the games and just watch the anime and movies?

You can, but you'll get the setup without most of the payoff. SIGN and Roots are prologues, and their big climaxes live in the games. Path B shows the best screen-only route: the G.U. Trilogy film condenses the G.U. story, and Liminality plus a recap covers the PS2 games. I'm not aware of an anime that retells the PS2 story, and Liminality shows the real-world side only. Expect gaps there.

Do I need to play all the games?

For the whole story, yes: the four PS2 games are the foundation of Generation 1, and Link closes Generation 3 (it needs a fan patch). For less, G.U. Last Recode is one package on PS4, PC and Switch, and Generation 2 stands on its own (Path C), but it skips the beginning and the end.

Should I follow release order or chronological order?

Here they're nearly the same: Gen 1 (2002–03), then Gen 2 (2006–07), then Gen 3 (2010–12). The guide is laid out that way. The communities don't agree on one "official" order, so treat this as a solid default rather than a rule.

I've never seen any of it. Where do I start?

Start with SIGN and follow Path A. It's the intended beginning. If you can't commit to the whole thing, Path B covers it on screen, and Path C (Roots then G.U. Last Recode) is the smallest self-contained arc, for when you'd rather get straight to a game you can play today.

The PS2 games sound hard to get. Any way around it?

Used PS2 discs are often around $10–20 each, with complete sets going for roughly $100–130, so they're findable but the set adds up. If that's a no, the Another Birth novels, a YouTube story recap or a let's play will carry you through, then pick up at Roots.

06 · Fact-check

How the source material held up.

This guide started from an AI-written chat rundown. Each claim was checked against reference sites and news coverage. Here's what held, what needed fixing, and what couldn't be confirmed.

Confirmed

SIGN → games → Liminality. The four PS2 games begin right after SIGN ends. Liminality is four OVA episodes bundled one per game and set at the same time as them.

Confirmed

Roots → G.U. Roots is 26 episodes. G.U. Rebirth picks up directly from where it leaves off.

Confirmed

Last Recode. It's the three G.U. games remastered plus the new Volume 4, Reconnection. PS4 and PC came in 2017, and Switch followed in March 2022.

Confirmed

Gen 3. Link is a Japan-only PSP game (2010) with a complete community English patch. Quantum is a 3-episode OVA (2011). The Movie arrived January 2012.

Corrected

"Legend of the Twilight diverges halfway." The anime actually branches from the manga after about the first four of twelve episodes. The manga is the canon version.

Corrected

"PS2 copies are incredibly expensive." Individual discs commonly sell for around $10–20. Complete sets run roughly $100–130 (a few spot prices, so treat them as rough). It's the full set that's pricey, not each disc.

Added

Things the original left out: the G.U. Trilogy film, the Another Birth novels, the Intermezzo and Unison OVAs, Japan-only Versus, Fragment and Zero, and the new .hack//Z.E.R.O. announced in 2026.

Unverified

"Quantum is highly rated" and "a great standalone." I found the release facts but no solid source for the quality claim or its exact timeline slot, so this guide only calls it a side story.
